1994-2002 Contingent traces its roots back to Cables to Go (C2G) and Lastar Group which were both founded in Dayton, Ohio in the mid-1980s. The genesis of Contingent occurred when C2G acquired Lastar in 1994 and formed the CTG Datacomm group to provide network installation services. This group was renamed Contingent Network Services in 1999.
2002-2004 In 2002, Mark Stuhlreyer, and two partners, Eric Hand and Paul Roy, all active managers at the company, bought the assets of Contingent Network Services from CTG/Lastar and established a standalone LLC. At the time, Contingent had lost 95% of its revenue due to the financial failure of its largest Client. The company took on significant financial risk to rebuild the business because they believed in their unique value proposition for the large enterprise market.
2004-2011 In 2004, the team made a financial bet on expanding from core IT repair and installation business into managed WAN services based on this same strong belief of delivering something better for Clients and prospective Clients. By 2013 this managed services business accounted for 70% of Contingent revenue. The 2007-08 economic crisis marked another significant moment of truth. While managing the financial minefield of cancelled and stalled projects, Contingent went against the grain, doubling down on a commitment to hiring and re-investing across the board. The view was that the recession was a compelling reason for target prospects to reassess IT suppliers and see the value of Contingent’s transformative approach and the company wanted to be prepared. The result was unprecedented growth for the organization.
2011-2015 In 2011, Contingent moved its 45 employees into a purpose built corporate headquarters facility on 19 acres in West Chester, Ohio. The company headquarters eventually expanded to 29 acres to support Contingent’s growing team. In October, 2013, the company acquired the assets of the IVAN’s Network Services Group from Ability Network Inc. With that acquisition fully integrated the company's revenue surged and new large enterprise client attachment accelerated. By early 2015 the company had over 250 employees and was named to the Inc. 5000 for the eighth consecutive year.
2015-2021 In mid-summer 2015 the company was acquired by Comcast Business as a "bolt-on" allowing the acquirer to rapidly enter the highly competitive large enterprise managed WAN market. The newly acquired Contingent business unit operated for the next several years under the Contingent brand until more recently the brand was fully absorbed. As of 2021 Comcast Business still maintains a large presence in the West Chester, Ohio facility employing more than 300.
